Metabolic bone diseases are a group of disorders that affect the strength and structure of our bones. These diseases are characterised by a variety of changes in our bone metabolism, including changes in bone mineralization, formation, and resorption. The most common metabolic bone diseases include osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and Pagets disease.

Common Diseases

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease, affecting millions of people worldwide. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, in UK, 21.9% of women and 6.7% of men aged 50 years or more were estimated to have osteoporosis. It is characterised by decreased bone mass and density, leading to an increased risk of fractures. Osteomalacia is another metabolic bone disease that results from a deficiency of vitamin D, leading to soften bones, as they become weak and brittle due to the loss of bone density and strength. It is often called a “silent disease” as there are usually no symptoms until a fracture occurs. Osteoporosis can happen to anyone, but it is more common in women after menopause and in older adults. Fractures from osteoporosis can occur in our spine, hip, and wrist, and can lead to chronic pain, disability, and loss of independence. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis first manifests in 21.2% of women and 6.3% of men over 50, approximately 5.5 million men and 22 million women. In the EU, UK, and Switzerland, there are now 32 million men and women who have osteoporosis. It is indeed a silent disease, and it’s very important to take precautionary measures.

Osteomalacia

Osteomalacia is a condition where our bones become soft and weak due to a deficiency of vitamin D or problems with the metabolism of vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for the absorption and utilisation of calcium, and without it, bones become weak and prone to fractures. Osteomalacia can cause muscle weakness, bone pain, and fractures. It is more common in older adults and the ones that have limited sun exposure.

Paget’s (PAJ-its) disease

It has been estimated that around 2-3 people in 100 over the age of 50 in the UK have Paget’s Disease in some part of their skeleton. Paget’s disease is a rare condition where our bones become deformed and enlarged due to abnormal bone remodelling. The abnormal bone growth can cause the bones to become weaker and more prone to fractures. Pagets disease can affect any bone, but it is most common in the pelvis, spine, and skull. Symptoms of Paget’s disease include bone pain, joint pain, bone deformities, and nerve compression.

Effects

Metabolic bone diseases can have significant effects on our quality of life. Fractures are a common complication of osteoporosis and can lead to pain, disability, and loss of independence. Osteomalacia can cause muscle weakness and pain, while Paget’s disease can cause bone deformities and nerve compression.

Symptoms

Symptoms of metabolic bone diseases can vary depending on the specific disease. Osteoporosis may not have any symptoms until a fracture occurs, while osteomalacia can cause muscle weakness, bone pain, and fractures. Paget’s disease can cause bone pain, deformities, and nerve compression.

Consider the following to look after your bones

Turmeric

Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric and has potent anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation is a known risk factor for osteoporosis and can contribute to bone loss. Studies suggest that curcumin may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in our bone tissue, leading to improved bone density and strength. Our natural and bone health supplement has turmeric extract with 95% curcuminoids which can be considered to look after our bones.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an important mineral for our bone health. It helps regulate calcium metabolism and supports the formation and maintenance of our bone tissue. Magnesium deficiency is common, especially in older adults, and can increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Magnesium is essential for converting vitamin D into its active state, which helps our body absorb calcium. It helps to keep our bones healthy and strong.

Calcium

Calcium is also one of the most important minerals for our bone health. It is the primary building block of our bones and is necessary for our bone formation, growth, and maintenance. A calcium deficiency can lead to weakened bones and increase the risk of fractures. When one or more of our parathyroid glands become overactive and secrete an excessive amount of parathyroid hormone you may have hyperparathyroidism. This results in hypercalcemia, a condition where your blood calcium levels increase. Hence, calcium intake is crucial. Seawater extract provides a natural source of calcium that is highly absorbable by the body. Our natural and bone health supplement comes with purified seawater extract that helps prevent calcium deficiency, which intake supports bone health.

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D is essential for the absorption and utilisation of calcium. It helps our body absorb calcium from food and supplements, and without it, our bones can become weak and prone to fractures. Vitamin D deficiency is common, especially in older adults, and can lead to osteomalacia and osteoporosis. Plant-based vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is a vegan-friendly form of vitamin D that is derived from lichen, you can find it in our natural and bone health supplement

Zinc

Zinc is a trace mineral that is essential for bone formation and growth. It helps stimulate the activity of osteoblasts, the cells responsible for building bone tissue. Zinc deficiency can lead to decreased bone density and an increased risk of fractures. Guava extract provides a natural source of zinc that is easily absorbed by the body. Our bone health supplement with natural guava extracts can help prevent zinc deficiency and support bone health.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K2 is essential for our bone health because it activates osteocalcin, a protein necessary for our bone formation. It also helps regulate calcium metabolism and prevent calcium from accumulating in soft tissues, such as arteries. Vitamin K2 deficiency is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures. The natural fermented strain of Bacillus Subtilis provides an active form of vitamin K2 known as MK-7, which can help prevent vitamin K2 deficiency and support bone health.

Hypromellose

The capsule shell made from vegetable cellulose, also known as hypromellose, is an important consideration when selecting supplements for bone health or any other health concern. It is the outer layer that encloses the supplement and serves to protect the contents from oxidation, light, moisture, and other environmental factors that can degrade the quality and efficacy of the supplement. It is a safe way to deliver nutrients without the use of animal products. It is a non-toxic, water-soluble material that is easily digestible by the body. In our bone health supplement, we use hypromellose.

Conclusion

In summary, these ingredients play an important role in supporting our bone health, fight bone disease and prevent metabolic bone diseases. Our bone health supplement with these natural ingredients, in combination with a healthy diet can do wonders.
